Gold Filament Rejuvenation
Gold Threads and Skin Rejuvenation by Neocollagenesis
Gold filament rejuvenation is a technique used for more than 10 years across Europe and Asia, and is a low-impact, highly effective technique for improving the youthfulness of skin. Of all the treatements that stimulate the production of new collagen to thicken the skin and reduce wrinkles, the gold thread approach is the longest lasting — up to 10 years. Because thicker skin is more youthful and more elastic, it also will retract better after procedures such as liposuction or a facelift, and so in our clinic we often recommend gold threads to our patients having these treatments.
The approach implants a loose matrix of hair-thin gold threads just under the surface of the skin. The gold is medically pure and inert, but stimulates the body to create collagen and gives rise to a network of small, new blood vessels giving the skin a renewed elasticity and firmness. It can be used on any part of the body where skin is beginning to sag or wrinkle.
How is it done?
The cosmetic surgeon threads the gold filaments within the thickness of skin. The procedure creates an imperceptible net-like structure hidden under the surface. It typically only requires one hour, but this will depend on the size of the treated area. The technique is painless, only requires a local anaesthetic or IV sedation, and allows the patient to return home, and resume normal life the following day.
Areas of Treatment
The areas of treatment can include any part of the body, almost anywhere where skin has lost its firmness, but is not yet loose. Face, neck decolletage, hands, buttocks, and tummy can all be treated advantageously.
How does it work?
The network of fine gold threads provide some mechanical support to the overlaying skin, however, the main effect is produced by the generation of collagen and elastin fibres that develop around the thread. New blood vessels appear in the area, skin becomes more supple, firmer, and thicker with the resulting improved blood supply.
Are there any contra-indications?
The technique is not recommended if there is active infection, malignancy, autoimmune diseases, tendency to scar or pigment badly, pregnancy, breast feeding, or allergy to gold. Potential contra-indications are determined during a consultation with the cosmetic surgeon.
Are there side effects?
Side effects are primarily short-lived bruising, swelling, or mild lumpiness. These generally all subside within two weeks.
What happens to the gold filaments after?
Gold filaments are very fine sutures, and with time are partially absorbed by body, however, this process is imperceptible to the patient.
How long do the effects of gold filaments last?
Firmness of skin will eventually become less apparent with time, but the procedure is typically effective up to 10 years.
